These four paintings of nighttime foggy woods are inspired by Mt. Tabor Park at night. The vague shapes of the trees in the darkness are barely illuminated by the warm glow of street lanterns sprinkled through the park.
This painting is full of gray and violet tones. The cool mist in the air between the trees is palpable.
In “Glow in the Woods,” the shapes of the trees are backlit by a mysterious warm orange glow. This light comes from a streetlight out of the frame. The colors form a pleasing abstract composition.
In this painting, you can see the source of the light behind the slender trunks of the tall trees, where it shines white with a halo of orange that fades out to red. The painting is titled “Lantern Light,” but it’s just as easy to imagine this warm glowing light comes from a small campfire.
This painting, called “Night Tree,” shows the lovely, strong shape of a solitary tree mostly cloaked in the dark of night. The beautiful gradient of cloudy colors in the background ranges from violet and orange-red on the left to blue-gray tones on the right. This painting is reminiscent of my past painting of another lone tree, Roots and Wings.
I find these images slightly spooky, perfect for the start of fall as Halloween approaches. They’re also very beautiful and mysterious.
